It provides general guidance for the use of direct-reading Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy for occupational and environmental air monitoring. FTIR spectroscopy can provide the flexibility, sensitivity, and specificity for real-time field measurement of known and unknown components in mixtures. This monograph discusses instrument design, sampling and analysis challenges, field applications, data analysis, and quality assurance issues. Closed and open-path FTIR spectrometers are described in detail. This monograph also discusses a unique application of these instruments for mapping chemicals in real time using environmental CAT Scanning.
