ACGIH® PRESENTS FOUR NEW DOWNLOADABLE PRODUCTS

Cincinnati, Ohio — May 14, 2008 — ACGIH® has released four new downloadable products: Control Banding: Issues and Opportunities; and three Air Sampling Technologies: Principles and Applications Monographs — Aerosol Sampler Calibration; Nanoparticles and Ultrafine Aerosol Measurements; and Sampling for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive Agents during Emergency Response to Mass Destructive Attacks, Terrorism, and Chemical Disasters.

Control Banding: Issues and Opportunities — Control Banding schemes have been developed to allow users to quickly determine proper controls for worker protection based on readily available information on health hazards, exposure potential and existing controls. They are primarily intended for use by small and medium sized enterprises that lack professional industrial hygiene expertise.

In 2005, the ACGIH® Board of Directors chartered a task force of experts in toxicology and exposure assessment to review existing Control Banding schemes (i.e., COSHH Essentials and the WHO/ILO Toolkit), identify the key issues associated with their use, and offer specific recommendations for improvement in each of the main components of the schemes. The recommendations represent opportunities for industrial hygienists to apply their expertise and efforts to ensure that Control Banding is adequately developed and validated prior to its wide application as a viable and effective exposure control strategy. This document reports those findings.

Air Sampling Technologies: Principles and Applications Monographs — The following monographs will be included in a future publication of the ACGIH® Signature Publications Series entitled Air Sampling Technologies: Principles and Applications.

Aerosol Sampler Calibration — This monograph reviews the calibration techniques relevant to aerosol samplers, such as sizing instruments, devices for measuring concentrations, and size selective samplers. Test facilities, generation of test aerosols, and testing procedures are emphasized.

Nanoparticles and Ultrafine Aerosol Measurements — Nanoparticle and ultrafine aerosol measurements have attracted much attention recently, because of the ongoing national initiative on nanotechnology. This monograph focuses its discussion on the measurement of 3-D particles.

Sampling for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive Agents during Emergency Response to Mass Destructive Attacks, Terrorism, and Chemical Disasters — This monograph presents basic information to help those interested in first response begin the searching and evaluating process to obtain air sampling equipment that will suit their specific needs for emergency response to the potential use of "weapons of mass destruction (WMD)". This collection of background information and sources for additional reference has important implications for those involved in emergency services, law enforcement, and counterterrorism teams, as well as for others involved in prevention, such as border patrols, transportation, and customs agents. It is further intended for occupational health and safety professionals, scientific researchers, and public health managers involved in design and implementation of prevention or first response programs.
