TLVs® and BEIs® are guidelines to be used by professionals trained in the practice of industrial hygiene. The TLVs® and BEIs® are not developed or intended to be used as legal standards. They are solely health-based values recommended by ACGIH® committees that review existing published and peer-reviewed literature in various scientific disciplines. Based on the available information, and an analysis and evaluation process, ACGIH® formulates a conclusion as to what level of exposure a healthy worker can experience without an unreasonable risk of disease or injury. No consideration is given to economic or technical feasibility.

ACGIH® is a member-based organization that advances worker health and safety through education and the development and dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge. ACGIH® is one of the industry's leading publications resources, with approximately 400 titles relative to occupational and environmental health and safety, including the renowned TLVs® and BEIs®.
