About this product:

Control of worker exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a very challenging task for the occupational health professional. PAHs comprise human carcinogens and can be absorbed by inhalation, dermally and through ingestion. Occupational exposure can be confounded by the presence of PAHs in tobacco smoke and foods. The ACGIH® Biological Exposure Indices (BEI®) Committee recommends that urinary levels of 1-hydroxypyrene be used to estimate workplace exposure to PAHs. An "Nq" designation was indicated because it was neither possible to place the determinant in the context of the current ACGIH® TLV® for PAHs mixtures nor were available data sufficiently strong to recommend a BEI® based on health effects. Therefore, the ACGIH® BEI® Committee has provided a guidance benchmark level to practitioners to indicate when occupational exposure contributes to levels of 1-hydroxypyrene to estimate occupational exposure to PAHs. The data indicate that the marker may be used to differentiate current from chronic exposure and to control for PAHs in tobacco smoke and diet. The approach proposed by the United Kingdom Health and Safety Executive is compared to the BEI®. In addition, a perspective on the use of 1-hydroxypyrene to monitor PAHs exposure is provided by a speaker from the industrial community.

This 2-½ hour webinar is presented by Glenn Talaska, MSPH, PhD., professor of Environmental Health at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine and Vice-Chair of the ACGIH® BEI® Committee; John Cocker, PhD, Head of the Biological Monitoring Section of the Health and Safety Laboratory in the United Kingdom and also a member of the ACGIH® BEI® Committee; and Peter Boogaard, PharmD, PhD, Senior Toxicology Consultant at Royal Dutch Shell's global headquarters in The Hague (The Netherlands).
