Chemical Substances and Other Issues Under Study (BEI® Committee)
ACGIH® has a procedure that provides the public with an indication of where those chemical substances and physical agents under study fall in the development process. Tier 1 indicates which chemical substances or physical agents may move forward as an NIC in the upcoming year. Tier 2 indicates which chemical substances or physical agents will not move forward in the upcoming year. For more information, please see the ACGIH® TLV®/BEI® Development Process.
Tier 1 (may move forward with an NIC proposal in 2009)
Chemical Substances
Fluorides
2-Methoxyethanol/2-Methoxyethyl acetate
Methyl isobutyl ketone
Pentachlorophenol
Toluene
Toluene diisocyanate
Uranium
Vanadium pentoxide
Tier 2 (will not move forward with an NIC proposal in 2009)
Chemical Substances
Beryllium
Manganese (added 4/20/2008)
Mercury
α-Methyl styrene
Mineral oil
Naphthalene (added 4/20/2008)
Thallium (added 4/20/2008)
Other Issues
- Metabolic polymorphisms.
- Effect of physical exertion on body burden and the BEI®.
- Consistency of BEI® Documentation.
Feasibility Assessments
For the substances listed below, the BEI® Committee has determined that developing a BEI® is not currently feasible owing to inadequate scientific data. However, the Committee believes that these substances may pose important risks to the health of workers, and therefore, it encourages the submission of new data. Field or experimental studies on the relationship between biological indicators and either health risk or environmental exposure are needed for these agents. A brief summary of the current negative feasibility assessment, including data needs, for each of the listed substances is available from The Science Group, ACGIH®.
