Webinar

Introduction of Computational Fluid
Dynamics Applied in Industrial Ventilation

March 18, 2020
2:30–4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

Content

This webinar will focus on how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are used in the field of Industrial Ventilation. It will demonstrate how this visual technique can be a powerful tool in ventilation design and in troubleshooting industrial ventilation systems. Not only will attendees gain an understanding of how to use CFD, but also why it has become a critically important method used in the evaluation, optimization, and diagnosis of existing problems with industrial ventilation systems. By using CFD one can expect to see gains in system efficiency and operating cost savings. Every practitioner of ventilation system design and troubleshooting should know and understand this new, advanced, computer-based diagnostic tool.

The webinar will start with a brief explanation of what Computational Fluid Dynamics entails, followed by how CFD works. Several examples of CFD practical applications will be shown in a simple, visual way so that the audience can really see why CFD is an advanced tool, capable of providing great benefits for the system designers, troubleshooters, and maintenance personnel. We will focus on how CFD can actually save money and make companies more competitive. Finally, we will show (with actually CFD images) how to use CFD to design the correct hood shape and to select the best hood location that will optimize system design flow rates that are required to efficiently capture the desired pollutants.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this webinar, attendees will:

  • Become familiar with what is and how CFD works.
  • Better understand how CFD can be applied to the design of ventilation systems.
  • Better understand how CFD can be applied in the analysis of diagnostic and troubleshooting of ventilation systems.
  • Understand advantages to using CFD for Hood Design and when CFD assistance might justify the extra expense.
  • Know that CFD is not “magic” but a mathematical science-based method.
  • Gain insight into how CFD can impact your competitiveness versus a company that does not use the tool.  This is often asked in the fashion “how can I sell this extra cost to company management?”

Who Should Attend this Webinar?

  • Practicing IHs
  • Occupational Safety and Health Professionals
  • Engineers and Designers
  • Engineering Students
  • Maintenance Personnel
  • Industrial Ventilation System Diagnostic Professionals

What is an ACGIH® Webinar?

ACGIH® is dedicated to providing quality, scientific, educational events. One method of doing this is to offer distance-learning webinars. A webinar, short for Web-based seminar, is a presentation, lecture, or seminar that is transmitted over the Internet. A key feature of a webinar is its interactive elements — the ability to give, receive and discuss information. Webinars are as effective as on-site presentations without the travel expense. This ACGIH® webinar is 1.5 hours in duration and consists of a live presentation given via the Internet with an audio telephone link similar to that of a conference call.

Accreditation

This webinar contains 1.5 contact hours and may be eligible for Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) CM credit. See the ABIH website (abih.org) for CM credit criteria. This webinar may also qualify for CSP recertification points. See the BCSP website (bcsp.org) for details. Participants seeking confirmation of attendance for the webinar from ACGIH® must attend the live webinar or view the archive and submit a final exam and evaluation. Certificates of Completion will be issued in a timely manner after receipt and completion of these items.
