Webinar –
Novel Method for Pre-Ventilation of Shipping Containers
February 10, 2021
2:00–3:30 PM ET

Numerous sea containers arrive with high levels of hazardous volatile chemicals, including carcinogens, in the interior air. This presents a serious health risk during inspection and unstuffing. The problem remains largely unaddressed due to ignorance, lack of suitable field instruments for chemical identification, and lack of suitable ventilation methods. The webinar would address three topics: (1) which chemicals are found in the air of containers arriving in Sweden and at what levels, (2) personal exposure of workers unstuffing containers, and (3) a new, easy to use and efficient method ventilation of containers prior to unstuffing.

Learning Objectives

Attendess will learn the awareness:

  • of chemical risks associated with entering/unstuffing shipping containers,
  • of the difficulties in sampling and analysis of container air,
  • of the possibilities to ventilate the container prior to entrance (pre-ventilation),
  • of the risk of reaccumulation as ventilation is discontinued, due to continued off-gassing,
  • that an efficient and convenient method for pre-ventilation is now available,
  • that all containers should be pre-ventilated unless convincingly shown to be safe.

Who Should Attend This Webinar?

People involved in work environment and occupational safety aspects of unstuffing shipping containers, including industrial hygienists, safety engineers, line managers, and customs and food safety inspectors.

This webinar contains 1.5 contact hours and may be eligible for Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) CM credit. See the ABIH website (abih.org) for CM credit criteria. This webinar may also qualify for CSP recertification points. See the BCSP website (bcsp.org) for details. Participants seeking confirmation of attendance for the webinar from ACGIH must attend the live webinar or view the archive and submit a final exam and evaluation. Certificates of Completion will be issued in a timely manner after receipt and completion of these items.

What is an ACGIH® Webinar?

ACGIH is dedicated to providing quality, scientific, educational events. One method of doing this is to offer distance-learning webinars. A webinar, short for Web-based seminar, is a presentation, lecture, or seminar that is transmitted over the Internet. A key feature of a webinar is its interactive elements — the ability to give, receive and discuss information. Webinars are as effective as on-site presentations without the travel expense. This ACGIH webinar is 1.5 hours in duration and consists of a live presentation given via the Internet with no option for call in audio.
