Utilization of the ACGIH® TLVs® and BEIs® Book
February 12, 2020
2:00–3:15 PM Eastern Standard Time
This webinar will focus on the ACGIH® TLVs® and BEIs® Book and how to optimize its use.
The TLVs® and BEIs® Book is a concise compilation of exposure guidelines and associated recommendations. It is intended to serve as a key initial resource for practicing industrial hygienists to assist in the control of health hazards. Besides providing recommendations for Threshold Limit Values (TLVs®) and Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs®), it includes the philosophical and practical bases for the uses and limitations of TLVs® and BEIs®. The webinar will be comprised of: (1) a brief overview, including the policy statement on the use of TLVs® and BEIs® and the development process; (2) content related to chemical substances and biological exposure indices including where to find and how to interpret adopted values and associated endnotes and notations; (3) availability of online TLV® and BEI® resources; and (4) ways to participate in the TLV® and BEI® process using the Under study (US) list and Notice of Intended Changes (NIC). One of the key messages throughout the webinar is that the TLVs® and BEIs® Book must be used along with the individual Documentation for the agents being evaluated.
After participating in this webinar, attendees will:
- Become familiar with the overall content and purpose of the TLVs® and BEIs® Book.
- Better understand the process for setting TLVs® and BEIs® for Chemical Substances.
- Know how to find and interpret the Adopted TLVs® and BEIs® and associated abbreviations, notations, carcinogen classifications, etc.
- Know where to find the Notice of Intended Changes and Under Study Lists for TLVs® and BEIs®.
- Know where to find the Definitions and Notations, and Appendices and how they are used to supplement the recommended values.
- Be able to make efficient use of the TLVs® and BEIs® Book, a key resource for IHs.

What is an ACGIH® Webinar?
ACGIH® is dedicated to providing quality, scientific, educational events. One method of doing this is to offer distance-learning webinars. A webinar, short for Web-based seminar, is a presentation, lecture, or seminar that is transmitted over the Internet. A key feature of a webinar is its interactive elements — the ability to give, receive and discuss information. Webinars are as effective as on-site presentations without the travel expense. This ACGIH® webinar is 1.25 hours in duration and consists of a live presentation given via the Internet with an audio telephone link similar to that of a conference call.
This webinar contains 1.25 contact hours and may be eligible for Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) CM credit. See the ABIH website (abih.org) for CM credit criteria. This webinar may also qualify for CSP recertification points. See the BCSP website (bcsp.org) for details.
