Diffusion samplers are devices that separate particles or vapors by their differential diffusion mobilities. Diffusion denuders have been used in atmospheric sampling of SO<sub>2</sub>, NH<sub>3</sub>, and NO<sub>x</sub>, or as a scrubber in an acidic aerosol sampling system to remove certain types of gases to avoid absorption of these gases on particles collected in the filter. Diffusion batteries are frequently used in the laboratory to measure size distributions of nano-particles and in indoor environments to determine activity size distributions of radon progeny. This monograph describes the operating principle, theory, design, applications, and data analyses of diffusion batteries and denuders.
