NOW AVAILABLE! Combustible material, when finely divided into a dust, dispersed in the right concentration in a confined area, and in the presence of adequate oxygen and an ignition source, poses a serious threat to employee safety and health. Federal OSHA introduced a national emphasis program addressing combustible dust in October of 2007, reissued it in March of 2008, and has begun the process of developing an occupational safety and health standard addressing the hazard. If a combustible dust is handled, produced or generated by a facility, employers are encouraged to perform a process hazard assessment or analysis (PHA) to determine any risk(s) it poses. This webinar initially addresses the identification of combustible dust and provides a basic understanding of its control technologies. It then focuses on the overview, purpose, methods, and elements of a PHA that will lead to successfully identifying the hazards posed by combustible dust(s) in the workplace.
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will have a solid understanding of the purpose and process of performing a combustible dust PHA which will help participants be more engaged and informed members of PHA teams. Webinar participants will also be better able to interpret a PHA and implement corrective actions to address identified hazards. This webinar alone will not qualify someone to lead a combustible dust PHA team as special background knowledge and technical training is required.
After participating in this webinar, attendees will be able to discuss the following regarding combustible dusts:
- With respect to its identification and overview:
- Brief overview of hazard and requirements
- Explosion characteristics
- Sampling and accepted test methods
- Control measures
- Assessing the hazard it presents – what is a PHA?
- Overview and purpose of a PHA
- Types of PHAs and performance methods
- Who should participate as part of the PHA team
- Elements of a combustible dust PHA
- Special areas of focus for a combustible dust PHA
This webinar is 2.5 hours in length and may be eligible for certification maintenance points.
