The Meritorious Achievement Award is given to members of ACGIH® who have made outstanding, long-term contributions to the field of occupational health and environmental hygiene. The recipient of this year’s Meritorious Achievement Award is Robert F. Herrick, ScD, CIH.
Dr. Herrick is a Senior Lecturer on industrial hygiene in the Occupational Health Program at the T.H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Herrick has a 35-year history of service to ACGIH®. Joining ACGIH® in 1986, he became a member of the ACGIH® Board of Directors in the early 1990s and served as its Chair first in 1992 and again in 2013. Dr. Herrick also served the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) as the U.S. delegate to the Board shortly after the organization was founded in 1987. He served on the IOHA Board from 1991 to 1995 and was IOHA’s President in 1996. Dr. Herrick is also a Fellow of AIHA. He was certified in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene in 1980.
Dr. Herrick has served in leadership roles on committees and panels for numerous other professional organizations and federal government agencies including the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Dr. Herrick is an author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scholarly articles in occupational and environmental hygiene. He has authored or edited 10 books or book chapters. He has made a strong contribution mentoring students and publishing other occupational and environmental health researchers by serving as guest editor of issues of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, among other publications. Dr. Herrick has also authored 44 technical reports of studies and investigations in occupational and environmental settings. He has given presentations at approximately 100 international meetings and symposia. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous occupational hygiene and health journals, helping to build the research and scientific bases for professional practice.
Dr. Herrick’s dedication and service to the occupational health and industrial hygiene profession, his commitment to ACGIH®’s mission and support for our profession render him a worthy recipient of the Meritorious Achievement Award and it is with honor that ACGIH® names him as the 2018 Meritorious Achievement Award recipient. The Meritorious Achievement Award will be announced at the ACGIH® Membership Reception and Annual Meeting of the Membership and at the AIHce Opening Session, and presented at the Mark of Excellence Breakfast.
