Dr. Weems, a lion of a figure in the occupational health and safety industry, passed away on December 10, 2019.
Dr. Weems was Director Emeritus of UA SafeState at the University of Alabama. There he was a leader, an instructor, and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of his guidance.
Some highlights of Dr. Weems’ illustrious career include:
- First award recipient of the William J. Higgins Award in 2005. The Higgins Award is the national OSHA award for safety excellence in the small business community.
- Served with UA’s Consultation Program since 1978, first as its supervisory health consultant and later as program manager. He advocated for many innovative improvements that made a significant impact on the quality and recognition of the UA SafeState consultation program.
- Appeared before Congress to request including language in the OSH Act that provided statutory recognition of the On-Site Consultation Program. The Act was ultimately amended to include a subsection that required the establishment of a compliance assistance program by which employers can consult with state personnel regarding the application of, and compliance with, OSHA standards.
- Led a team in the development of the Safety and Health Program Assessment Worksheet, the Consultation Program’s measurement tool that captures essential elements of an effective safety and health management system.
Dr. Weems touched many lives and inspired many careers. He will be sorely missed. Dr. Weems is survived by his wife, children, family and friends. Information regarding arrangements will be posted when available.
