Bioaerosols: Assessment and Control – DIGITAL

Expanding far beyond its predecessor, this text offers a comprehensive guide to the assessment and control of bioaerosols in the full range of contemporary workplaces. The popular Guidelines notebook, originally published by ACGIH® in 1989, offered 100 pages of information. This volume is more than quintuple the size of the earlier version.

Although the indoor environment remains a focus of concern, much of the information in this publication has application beyond office environments. The prominence of saprophytic microorganisms remains; however, more attention has been given to other important biological agents (e.g., arthropod and animal allergens, infectious agents, and microbial volatile organic compounds). In addition, fuller descriptions were provided for microbial toxins and cell wall components that may cause health effects.

Control Banding: Issues and Opportunities – DIGITAL

In 2005, the ACGIH® Board of Directors chartered a task force of experts in toxicology and exposure assessment to review existing Control Banding schemes (i.e., COSHH Essentials and the WHO/ILO Toolkit), identify the key issues associated with their use, and offer specific recommendations for improvement in each of the main components of the schemes. The recommendations represent opportunities for industrial hygienists to apply their expertise and efforts to ensure that Control Banding is adequately developed and validated prior to its wide application as a viable and effective exposure control strategy. This document reports those findings.

Industrial Ventilation: A Manual of Recommended Practice for Design, 30th Edition – DIGITAL

Since its first edition in 1951, Industrial Ventilation: A Manual of Recommended Practice has been used by engineers, regulators and industrial hygienists to design and evaluate industrial ventilation systems.

Beginning with the 26th Edition, the Manual has undergone several major reorganizations and upgrades – the addition of a second compendium Manual dedicated to operation and maintenance; subsequent additions of chapters on organization and evaluation of systems; metric solutions and tables; and calculation sheets and methods.

Now in its 30th Edition, changes in many of the chapters and conceptual figures that incorporate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been added for clarification and incorporated for simpler conceptual understanding of airflow patterns. Care has been taken to make this Manual a practical user’s handbook, written with deference toward a simpler and more concise means of explanation.

In addition, the Manual incorporates a new control concept for vacuum extraction on welding guns to complement the four new conceptual design strategies found in the 29th Edition.

Particle Size-Selective Sampling for Particulate Air Contaminants – DIGITAL

Significantly expanded and completely updated, this revision of the 1985 text provides an in-dept look at particle size-selective criteria for aerosol exposure assessment. The book, prepared by the ACGIH® Air Sampling Procedures Committee, considers not only the harmonized criteria agreed upon by such scientific bodies as ISO, ACGIH®, and CEN, but also the new issues that are emerging as a result of the criteria.

The book is divided into two parts. The first covers the background and status of what is now generally agreed upon and adopted. Topics include the scientific rational for particle size- selective sampling in both working and living environments; the essential physiological background; research leading to the development of formal definitions for the inhalable, thoracic, and respirable conventions in the working environment; and the development of corresponding conventions for particles in the ambient atmospheric environment. The history and current status of practical sampling instrumentation for the measurement of various particle size fractions is discussed. A section also reviews the general framework for developing TLVs® and discusses how the new particle size-selective sampling criteria may be applied in that process.

The second part of the book deals with emerging issues where new knowledge is pointing the way towards the development of new or extended particle size-selective criteria. Among the topics of discussion are the distinction between particles that penetrate into the lung and those which are actually deposited, how the particle size affects the manner in which particles react with biological systems, and how standards should be set to define and determine the acceptability of aerosol sampling instruments in relation to the new particle size-selective criteria.
