The John J. Bloomfield Award is presented to a young industrial hygienist who pursues the problem of occupational health hazards primarily by doing fieldwork. The 2021 Bloomfield Award recipient is Michael Grant, ScD.
Dr. Grant earned his Doctor of Science in Environmental Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health where his research focused on designing, implementing, and evaluating interventions in the commercial construction and healthcare industries. He also earned his Master of Science in Environmental Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (focused on Industrial Hygiene) and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (focused on Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and Public Health). He is an Industrial Hygienist at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Since joining NIOSH in 2016, Dr. Grant has conducted a wide variety of complex and impactful scientific evaluations for the Health Hazard Evaluation program. These evaluations covered emerging industries like cannabis cultivation and processing along with well-established industries coping with new regulatory challenges like exposures to respirable crystalline silica in the construction industry. He is involved in research efforts to better understand exposures to peracetic acid in the healthcare, biopharma, and protein processing industries. Dr. Grant has additionally volunteered for emergency response roles for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most recently serving in a variety of leadership and support roles for the CDC/NIOSH COVID-19 pandemic response, having a nation-wide impact.
Dr. Grant has consistently demonstrated his dedication to the industrial hygiene profession by maintaining membership in organizations like ACGIH® and AIHATM, attending conferences, and participating in training and webinars to improve his knowledge and skillset. He was a student member of ACGIH from 2011-2013 and has been a voting member since 2018. He has been a member of AIHA since 2016 and has recently sought out more opportunities to help further his involvement in the profession by volunteering with the AIHA Government Relations and Cannabis Industry Health and Safety committees.
